Distances
Darwin to Broome to Perth via the Kimberley in Australia
Emma Gorge
Where is Emma Gorge?
Emma Gorge is an hour's drive from Kununurra in Western Australia's
Kimberley region.
To get to Emma Gorge, located within El Questro Wilderness Park,
you'll need to drive from Kununurra via the Gibb River Road.
The drive is 83 km west from Kununurra, mostly on a sealed road,
with a 2 km unsealed driveway to the gorge requiring a 4WD.
Can you get to Emma Gorge without a 4WD? You can reach the gorge
by ordinary car. Unlike Zebedee Springs, Chamberlain Gorge and
Amalia Gorge you shouldn't need a 4WD. The road from Kununurra
is sealed, including the first part of the Gibb River Road,
until you get to the Emma Gorge turn-off. From the turn-off
it is a couple of kilometres on a good dirt road.

How long does the walk take? Without stopping
for photos or having a swim at the end, the walk takes about
two hours for the round trip. How difficult is the walk? Some
sections of the walk involve scrambling up and over large rocks.
It isn't difficult but if you are old or infirm this isn't the
walk for you. The trickiest bit is staying on the trail. The
trail is signposted by small blue triangular flashes attached
to the occasional rock. It is easy to lose sight of them. At
one point on the return leg we failed to notice the trail crossed
to the other side of Emma Creek. On our side of the creek the
boulders got harder and harder to negotiate until we realised
we must have gone wrong somewhere. David slipped and, unusually
for him, got a bit stressed but we back-tracked, found the trail
and no real harm was done. He made me edit that last sentence
to include the word 'bit'. Actually he got a lot stressed however,
unlike our much more frightening experience getting lost at
Amalia Gorge we had plenty of daylight left.
There are two swimming holes: Turquoise Pool, about 200 metres
from the end of the trail, and Emma Gorge Pool where the trail
finishes.

Getting Here
Your El Questro adventure begins with the journey itself. Tucked
away in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia the most
direct way to get to us is via the town of Kununurra.
From Kununurra, El Questro Station is 110 kms
west: 58 kms on the Great Northern Highway towards Wyndham,
36 kms on a sealed section of the Gibb River Road, with the
remaining 16 kms on a gravel road.
You will need a 4WD to get into El Questro Station.
Self-driving
The entrance to El Questro is accessed mainly via sealed roads,
The 'driveway' to the Station is a 16km unsealed corrugated
section of road with several rocky water crossings into the
Station; the water crossings being approximately 300-500mm in
depth depending on the time of year, we do recommend high clearance
4WD only accessing the Station and the Homestead.
From Kununurra, El Questro Emma Gorge is
83 kms west: 58 kms on the Great Northern Highway towards Wyndham
and then 25 kms on a sealed section of the Gibb River Road.
The gravel driveway is 2 km and can be accessed by 2WD vehicles
during the dry.
A small creek crossing is located 300m from the entrance to
the resort.
We recommend checking with our onsite team that your 2WD vehicle
can travel through the crossing at the start of the season.
